The one comment that seems to emerge from almost every River Cottage customer at one time or another is ” WHERE CAN I GET HEALTHY LUNCHEON MEATS!!” Breakfast and supper seem to be more easily conquered than the brown bag meal in the middle of the day and many have told me that they cringe as they hand over the bag containing healthy bread sandwiching a couple of “nasty slices of who-knows-what from who-knows-where”. Well, thanks to the efforts of Chris and Mollie Eley this is about to be a problem of the past.I first met Chris when he visited our farm in Indiana and unfolded his vision for Goose the Market,; a full service, neighbourhood deli and butcher shop. From our first meeting I knew that Chris would do exactly what he envisioned and it wasn’t long after that I knew we had to get him to Slow Food’s Terra Madre. Here are a few picture of our trip to Turino, Italy. (check out Brayden’s hair!!) The center photo is of Chris exhibiting his keen bravery by being the first to taste a product none of us had ever seen before. What I thought were squares of tofu in brine turned out to be sugar cubes soaking in a very wicked 90-Proof firestarter served with a roasted coffee bean on top. This lovely dinner in Italy was the perfect enviroment for our Indiana delegates to plan and discuss our future course of action for the advancing of our local food economy back home.
Once back in the USA, Chris ran for, and achieved the bid to lead our wonderful Slow Food Indy chapter and he and Mollie set about to change the face of lunches everywhere.
Plans are in the works to transport River Cottage Veal to Smoking Goose to allow Chris and his cohorts to work on their magic and produce some stunning veal sausage for the shop.
